Escanaba Public Safety plans area food drive

ESCANABA – The Escanaba Department of Public Safety will be holding a food drive at Elmer’s County Market on Wednesday, June 11, from 3 to 8:30 p.m., .

Aside from assisting the local food pantries, the purpose of the food drive is to raise awareness for the need to fight food poverty in the local community, everyday. Statistically speaking, donations to food pantries decline in the summer months. Additionally, many children who are on a free or reduced lunch schedule stop receiving lunch during school’s summer recess. Many parents will struggle feeding their child three meals a day while their child is out of school. Struggling families will often turn to the food pantries in the summer months and we’re trying to do our part to help the local food pantries meet the spike in demand. That being said, we will be collecting non-perishable food donations which will be distributed equitably amongst the three food pantries located in with Delta County.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Green Bay Packers offensive guard/tackle Don Barclay will be on-site, signing autographs in support of the cause. Cost for an autograph will be a donation of a non-perishable food item or goodwill cash donation. Bring your own item to be signed or autograph items will be available for purchase.

Suggested donation items are; canned items (vegetables, meat, soup), whole grain pasta, brown rice, dried beans, cereal, peanut butter; for infants, formula, infant cereal, diapers, wipes; for kids, fruit cups, juice boxes, granola bars, crackers, popcorn, sugar-free pudding cups; non-food essentials, hygiene items, household items, and paper products.
