Carolina reed workshop July 16 in Manistique

MANISTIQUE – Celebrate Christmas – or get ready to – in July. Lake Effect Arts of Manistique is hosting instructor, Karen Poser, on Wednesday, July 16, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Ed Havitz Room, Habitat for Humanity, 401 Deer Street, Manistique.

From designing paper dolls as a child to selecting teaching art as a life career, creativity is an essential part of Poser’s life. She has a bachelor’s degree in art education, a master’s degree in creative arts and learning, and has taught kindergarteners through adults.

Poser’s work can be seen at Siever’s School of Fiber Art on Washington Island, Wis.; Allison Art House in Waukesha, Wis., and at Lake Effect Art Gallery in Manistique.

During this class, Poser will teach how to make three-dimensional Carolina reed “snowflakes,” also sometimes called Finnish stars or snowflakes. Google any of these terms to find dozens of examples.

The snowflakes may be made in a wide variety of sizes from small to large and could be hung indoors or out, looking lovely both summer and winter. If desired, the reeds may be dyed or the finished snowflakes spray painted and could even have a bit of glitter added. Mounted against a darker surface, the intricacy of the design is showcased. Hanging from ribbons or fishing line, they catch the breezes and twirl gently.

In addition to the snowflakes, Poser will teach how to make tiny flat woven reindeer of reed. These would make wonderful gifts or would enhance any tree or wreath decorated with natural materials. The class fee will cover one each of reindeer and snowflake as well as patterns.

Poser will bring the glue, reed, ribbon, and stain as well as mini clips that participants can borrow for class and purchase if they want to continue making these. Other supplies needed include: scissors, a ruler, clip clothespins, an old towel, pencil, bucket to soak reed, and old, comfy clothes.

The cost of the class is $20 for one snowflake and one reindeer. Additional snowflakes are $5, and reindeer are $3.

Class cost for LECAC members is $17 and $22 for non-members.
