James A. ‘Jim’ Kennedy
ESCANABA – James A. “Jim” Kennedy, 90, of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, Wis.
He was born on April 22, 1924, in Escanaba, the son of the late William and Gertrude (Ehnerd) Kennedy. Jim graduated from Escanaba Senior High School in 1942.
In December 1942, Jim entered military service and served with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and occupied Japan with the 98th Division Anti Tank Company as a Staff Sergeant until his discharge in February 1946.
Jim attended Michigan State University in 1946 and graduated in 1950 with a degree in business administration. Following graduation, he was employed as a field sales manager for the Hartford Insurance Group in Upper Michigan and Wisconsin. He later moved to Madison, Wis., and was employed by Capitol Indemnity Corporation Bonding Company as its agency superintendent for a five-state area. In 1976, he left this position and returned to Escanaba to take over as agency manager for Superior Insurance Services until his retirement in December 1998.
He was awarded the Jack Butterick Award in 1988 as Outstanding U.P. agent of the year, and served as convention chairman of the U.P. Association of Independent Insurance Agents from 1987 to 1997.
Jim served as secretary/treasurer of the United Way of Delta County for a number of years. He was a member of the Escanaba Country Club, Lion’s Club and the Elks Club #354.
He was a member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church.
Survivors include: four sons, James (Pam) of Aurora, Colo., Michael (Debbie) of Wausau, Wis., John of Middleton, Wis., Stephen (Dawn) of Escanaba; two daughters, Patricia (Wayne) Crum of Crandon, Wis., and Maureen (Robert) Perryman of Escanaba; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Bruce (Debbie) Krause of Niagara, Wis., Brenda (Warner) Story of Alvin, Texas, and Bonnie (Peter) Quinn of Escanaba.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; two sons, Matthew and Tim; two sisters and one brother.
Visitation will be on Saturday, June 21, 2014, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 10 a.m. The Elks Lodge #354 will have a memorial service at 11 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Kennedy family with arrangements.
