Boy killed in crash identified
ESCANABA – The victim of a fatal four-wheeler accident in Brampton Township Sunday evening has been identified as 12-year-old Wesley James Rein of Brampton.
Rein was a passenger on a four-wheeler which struck a semi truck trailer on M-35, north of Gladstone, shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the Delta County Sheriff’s Department.
The driver of the four-wheeler was a 15-year-old male from Brampton, said the sheriff’s department.
Rein was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the four-wheeler was transported by Rampart ambulance to OSF St. Francis Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released later that evening.
According to deputies, the two boys were attempting to cross the highway near 26 Lane when the four-wheeler struck a trailer being pulled by a southbound semi truck.
The semi truck was driven by Scott W. Schwittay, 48, of Wisconsin, according to the sheriff’s department.
The sheriff’s department continues to investigate the fatal accident and will receive a report from an accident reconstructionist from the Michigan State Police (MSP), said Undersheriff Phil Griebel this morning.
Assisting deputies at the scene on Sunday were troopers from the Gladstone Post, MSP Motor Carrier Division, MSP Accident Reconstructionist, Rampart Emergency Medical Services, Delta County Victim Services Unit, and Brampton Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Rein’s family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Grace Church at 528 28th St. in Gladstone. Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. at the church.
