Esky major girls earn district title game berth
GLADSTONE – The Escanaba Major Little League girls kept rolling over the weekend in the district tournament, earning a Wednesday title game berth.
The Esky All-Stars beat Iron Mountain North 11-0 on Saturday and coasted past Kingsford 8-2, Sunday.
Gabi Salo earned the victory on the mound in both games. Against Iron Mountain, she went four innings, allowing one hit and getting all 12 outs via strikeout. Nicole Kamin pitched the fifth and struck out two.
At the plate, Salo hit two singles and a double. Dakota Cloutier had a single and scored two runs, Georgia Lehto had a base hit and scored a run, Anna Smith had a single and scored two runs and Alison Sommers had two singles and scored three runs.
Against Kingsford, Salo went six innings strong, striking out 16 and allowing two hits and two walks.
Jalin Olson had two base hits, scored two runs and stole three bases. Kamin had a double, single and scored two runs. Sommers had a single and scored two runs and Kelly Mae went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Escanaba will play in the district title game, Wednesday against either Gladstone, Kingsford or Iron Mountain North.
Gladstone 20, Norway 0
GLADSTONE – The Gladstone Major Little League girls took care of business in their first game in the elimination bracket of the district tournament, Sunday, routing Norway 20-0.
Gladstone put up their total with just eight hits, taking advantage of mulitple errors and passed balls from the Norway squad.
“There were a lot of errors, passed balls and walks, they walked 12 and hit a couple kids,” said manager Rodney Schwartz. “it was one of those games.”
The Gladstone All-Stars used three pitchers – Brittany Schwartz, Andie Balenger and Morgan Letteriero in the four inning victory. Gladstone put put up two runs in the first, 14 in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth to reach its total.
Sydney Herioux had three hits and Jacinda Lippens went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Gladstone advances to face Iron Mountain North, tonight at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to play Kingsford, Tuesday at 6 p.m.
