Charges lessened in CSC case

ESCANABA – A 21-year-old Escanaba man was sentenced Monday to 83 days in jail on one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor earlier this year.

Joseph Richard Williams was arrested following an April 7 incident in Wells Township involving a female teen.

Williams was originally charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with a victim 13-15 years of age, each a 15-year felony. These counts were dismissed in May when he pleaded guilty to the two-year high-court misdemeanor of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

During Monday’s sentencing, Williams was granted credit for 83 days already served in Delta County Jail and was released.

He was also ordered to pay $1,298 in fines and costs and was placed on probation for five years.
