Cora Elizabeth Froberg

FORD RIVER TOWNSHIP – Cora Elizabeth Froberg, 96, of Ford River Township, passed away Friday, July 4, 2014, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers. She was born March 30, 1918, in Grand Rapids, Mich. and was the daughter of Frank and Ruth (Hayward) Guntley. Elizabeth grew up in Lathrop, Mich. and graduated from Rock High School in 1935. In 1936 she attended Cloverland Commercial College in Escanaba for secretarial training.

She later enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1938. Her college education was interrupted by events of World War II and marriage. After her children were raised and on their own, she resumed her college education earning her B.A. degree cum laude from Aquinas College of Grand Rapids, Mich. in 1976.

Elizabeth married Arnold W. Froberg of Gladstone in 1952. The family moved to Grand Rapids where they lived and worked for 23 years. Elizabeth followed a career of a legal secretary. Upon the death of her husband Arnold in 1975, she returned to the Upper Peninsula in 1976, residing in Ford River Township. Elizabeth was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. One of her most significant church activities included representing First Lutheran in an ecumenical ministry at the Delta County Jail, whereby she took her turn bringing Sunday morning worship services to the jail inmates.

She also participated in the Stephen Ministry program at First Lutheran Church for over 20 years, and in the church’s Transformational Ministry. The most precious legacy she leaves is love of God and faith in His promises, and love of family. Elizabeth was also interested in her community. She spent about 20 years as a volunteer in the Laubach Literacy Program, teaching adults to read and write. Elizabeth was a member of the Bonifas Arts Center, enjoyed painting, playing golf, maintaining family history and was a member of the Michigan Federation of Business and Professional Women. Cora Elizabeth Froberg is survived by: daughter, Carol (Froberg) VanBennekom of Grand Rapids, Mich.; sons, Stefan Froberg of Bark River and Walter (Polly) Veldman of Ontonagon; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by grandson, Steele Veldman, and sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Albert Chipman.

Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Cora Elizabeth Froberg will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone with Rev. Peggy Rose officiating.

A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the First Lutheran Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone. Memorials can be directed to the First Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available at the Anderson Funeral Home.
