John P. Holochwost
PERRONVILLE – John P. Holochwost, 97, of Perronville, passed away peacefully at Emmons Adult Foster Care Home in Bark River on Saturday, July 12, 2014.
He was born in Doering, Wis., on May 11, 1917, the son of Peter and Josephine (Olkives) Holochwost.
John is a graduate of Harris High School. He continued his education at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Northern Michigan University, later completing work toward his master’s degree.
On July 8, 1939, John married Jean Skrobiak at St. George Catholic Church in Bark River.
John touched many lives in the classroom at schools in the area including: Stonington Bungalow School for three years, Perronville School for one year, South Ford River School for two years, Ford River School Elementary School for 13 years, Jefferson Elementary School for one year, and served as a teaching principal for 13 years. John served on the Bark River-Harris School Board for four years.
He was a member of the Michigan Education Association, Michigan Association of Elementary Principals, Delta County Retired School Personnel, and AARP.
John received the Michigan Education Association Honor Award, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel Distinguished Service Award, and a certificate of appreciation for a valuable contribution given to Salem Lutheran Church.
John spent all but his early childhood years in Perronville and a five-year span in California near the end of his life.
Some of John’s favorite pastimes include: hunting, fishing, singing gospel and country music, writing gospel songs, and entertaining folks in convalescent homes and senior citizen groups. He also liked to build, do carpentry work, and taxidermy of big game animals. John operated and delivered a beef herd for 30 years. John arranged and managed baseball for children in Perronville, Bark River and Ford River communities for three years.
John was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River. He taught Sunday school for eight years, and was a member on the church board.
John is survived by his two sons, Larry and (Toni) of Lake Isabella, Calif. and Tim (Maxine) of Perronville; two daughters, Cynthia Johnson Markowski of Dagget and Becky (Bill) Belanger of Cochranville, Pa; sons-in-law, Keith Johnson and Michael Markowski; grandsons, Matt and Andy Holochwost, Ben, Nathan and Josh Holochwost, Allen, Casey and Mark Johnson; grand-daughters, Laura Johnson and Ruth Drake; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Agnes VanEnkevort of Bark River, Victoria Mooney of Redding, Calif., and Josephine Lee of Pinetop, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Loretta Skrobiak; and many, many, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jean, in 2001.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River.
