ESCANABA – Celeste Gayan, 98, of 2900 3rd Ave South, Escanaba, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2014, at Bishop Noa Home where she was a longtime resident.
She was born on Feb. 6, 1916, in Schaffer, daughter of James and Clara (Epple) Kenny. Celeste was raised and attended grade school in Schaffer. She graduated from Escanaba High School in 1934.
On Aug. 30, 1947, Celeste married Andrew E. Gayan at St. Patrick’s Church. He preceded her in death.
She was employed with the Boston Sweet Shoppe and the National Grocery Store.
Celeste was a very active member of St. Patrick’s Church.
Survivors include: her son, Paul “Curly” (Janice) Gayan of Escanaba; daughter, Patricia (Rick) Munday of Spencer, Iowa; grandsons, Andrew Munday and Brian Butler; granddaughter, Angela Gayan; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded by a son, Roger Gayan; a daughter, Mary Gayan; grandchildren, Greg Munday and Myra Ann Munday; and all of her eight siblings, Harold, Howard, Lester, Genevieve, Althea, Myra, Madelyn, and Patricia.
Visitation will be on Monday, July 21, 2014, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph and St. Patrick with Rev. Eric Olson officiating.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Bishop Noa Home/Memory Care Unit.
