Walk in the Park & 5K Fun Run for Brain Tumor Research

ESCANABA – The Tenth Annual Walk in the Park for Brain Tumor Research will be held Saturday at Ludington Park in Escanaba. To commemorate a decade of community support, this year’s event is themed “10 YEARS STRONG,” and now includes a 5K Fun Run, and live music by local band Madison Avenue, a variety band with a full horn section.

Walk-up registration is available the morning of the walk from 910 a.m.

The walk has raised $52,000 for brain tumor research since it began in 2005. All proceeds benefit Superior Health Foundation, and are earmarked exclusively for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center (UMBTC) at Marquette General Hospital.

The UMBTC is a non-profit care, treatment and research organization serving patients and families throughout the UP. Many walkers and supporters have been directly served by the UMBTC, including the two Escanaba-area families who organize the walk.

The McInnis family and the Anderson family are the families organizing the walk, in memory of their loved ones who lost their battles with brain tumors Don McInnis and Sue Anderson.

In addition to the 5K Fun Run and live music, other highlights of this year’s event are a Silly Hat Contest in memory of Don McInnis’ retired fishing hat, a memorial balloon release, bake sale, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and prizes from local businesses.

Generous sponsors making this event possible are Dobber’s Pasties, Delta County Credit Union, Luft Insurance Agency, and Skradski Family Funeral Homes.

People of all ages are welcome, and the event is dog-friendly. Two marked courses along the lake are available a two-mile walking loop and a 5K fun run.

Walk-up registration donation is $25/adult, $10/child.

Check-in opens at 9 a.m. at the pavilion at Ludington Park. The walk and 5K fun run start at 10, rain or shine. More information is available on-line at www.eskywalkinthepark.com, or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/EskyWalk, or by calling Carol McInnis at (906) 786-3717.
