Police investigate drowning of kayaker

BRAMPTON TOWNSHIP – Investigation continues into the drowning of a Gladstone man who was kayaking with a friend on Little Bay de Noc this weekend, according to Michigan State Police from the Gladstone Post.

The victim, Michael E. Waeghe, 48, and a friend, a male from Gladstone, were kayaking in separate kayaks at the mouth of the Days River in Brampton Township when the incident happened Friday evening.

Details on how the drowning occurred are not being released at this time, pending the open investigation, a trooper said this morning.

The emergency call came in to the post from the fellow kayaker. Area law enforcement responded to the report of a missing kayaker and located his body after an hour and a half of searching, said the trooper.

Assisting state police at the scene were Gladstone Public Safety, Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Delta County Search and Rescue, Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Delta County Air Ambulance.

Funeral arrangements for Waeghe are pending and will be announced by the Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County. A funeral home representative confirmed this morning that Waeghe was the victim in Friday’s drowning accident.
