Sault Ste. Marie officers hurt in foot chase
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) – Sault Ste. Marie police say two officers are recovering from injuries they sustained in falls while chasing two teenage suspects on foot in the dark.
The Evening News says Officer Chris Stempsky sustained a severe skull fracture and was flown to Marquette General Hospital for surgery.
Police say the chase happened about 4 a.m. Thursday and was part of a crackdown on thefts from vehicles and vandalism.
Police say Stempsky slid down an embankment and struck a bounder. They say Officer Nate Kaczmarek hurt his foot in a 7-foot fall.
Sgt. Francis Deshano told The Associated Press on Sunday that Stempsky is recovering at home, while Kaczmarek is returning to work.
Deshano says police arrested a 15-year-old Sault Ste. Marie boy and a 17-year-old Wisconsin girl.
