Eli Rochefort

GRAND MARAIS – Eli Rochefort, March 29, 1925 July 22, 2014. Eli Rochefort, 89, of Grand Marais, Mich., passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at his daughter’s home.

A funeral mass for Eli will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (1000 Grand Marais Ave., Grand Marais, Mich.) with Father Timothy Hruska presiding. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Monday one hour prior to Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Hospice or Holy Rosary Church. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Eli was born March 29, 1925, in Fayette, Mich., son of the late Amie and Mabel (Robare) Rochefort.

In 1944 he joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He served in World War II and was part of D-Day. He was stationed in Germany the majority of his military career before being honorably discharged in 1946.

Upon his return he began working on the fish tugs for DeVett Fisheries. He later worked as a truck driver and was instrumental in the construction of the West Pier in Manistique Harbor.

In 1951, while working for Tornovich Fisheries in Grand Marais, he met Jean Roberts, the love of his life. They were married on Sept. 20, 1955 at Holy Rosary Church.

In 1955 they moved to the Detroit area where he worked for Bud Wheels and then Love Brothers Trucking for 22 years. They moved back to Grand Marais in 1977 where he was custodian and bus driver for 10 years at Burt Township School. In his retirement he continued to work an additional five years for Burt Township.

Eli enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and most of all, spending time with his family. He loved to help others and always enjoyed doing jobs with his hands, especially woodworking.

Eli is survived by his wife, Jean Rochefort; three children, Don (Dorothy) Rochefort of Manistique, Cheryl Hunter of Newberry and Rebecca (Craig) Lobsinger of Mt. Pleasant; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ivan of Manistique, and Richard (Bonnie) of Earth City, Iowa; four sisters, Ellen McGuire of Alpena, Lorna Cutler of Gladstone, Ione (Jim) Collins of Fayette, and Mary Rochefort of Duluth, Minn.; son-in-law, Frank Short of Rapid River; sister-in-law, Doris Rochefort of Alpena; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan Short; eight siblings and spouses, Leslie (Mae) Rochefort, Leon Rochefort, Stanley Rochefort, Norman (Ella) Rochefort, Evelyn (Perry) Pardee, Stella (Leslie) Plante, Rose (Norb) Castine, and Betty Jean Rochefort; brother-in-law, Ed McGuire; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Rochefort.
