Evelyn M. Kivela
ROCK – Evelyn M. Kivela, 87, of Rock, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Christian Park Health Center in Escanaba. She was born on June 22, 1927, in Gwinn, and was the daughter of Charles Valeen and Lillian (Lund) Peltonen.
Evelyn attended and graduated in 1945 from school in Rock where she was valedictorian, a cheerleader, and played on the girls basketball teams. On Dec. 1, 1945, the former Evelyn Valeen married her high school sweetheart, Eino Kivela.
They moved for a short time to Chicago where Evelyn worked for the U.S. government, typing out war bonds, but returned to Rock in 1946. Evelyn went to work for the Rock Cooperative Credit Union as their bookkeeper. She also drove one of the Rock school buses for several years. Her favorite activities were sewing (at one point she estimated that she had sewn over 300 sets of her famous day-of-the-week dish towels to give as gifts), bowling (she and her team traveled many miles for various tournaments), baking (the best apple and blueberry pies you could get) quilting, antiquing, and collecting (she collected everything from dishes, to stamps, to coins, to matchbook covers).
Evelyn had been a member of the Rock Auxilliary for many years. She was also very involved in the Rock Senior Center and was even highlighted in one of their monthly newsletters. They lived there for their entire lives until Eino became ill and moved to the Jacobetti VA Home where he passed away in 2012.
Evelyn is survived by: four daughters, June Ferris of Plymouth, Minn., Jean Garrick of Apple Valley, Minn., Debra Peterson of Osseo, Minn., and Renee Depuydt of Rockford, Mich.; and sisters, Lois Nolen of Las Vegas, Nev. and Ginny Macey of Cheyenne, Wyo. She is also survived by: four granddaughters, Kelly, Lyndsay, Lauren, and Mallory; two grandsons, Cory and JR; and six great-grandchildren, Drew, Quinn, Chipper, Dillon, Alex and Keira.
In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her brothers, Eino Valeen and Mike Peltonen.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Evelyn Kivela will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stephen Gauger officiating. A luncheon will be served at the Faith Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Rock immediately following the service. Burial will take place in the Rock Cemetery.
