Gaylord A. Swagart
COOKS – Gaylord A. Swagart, 92 of 963N County Road 437, Cooks, Mich., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at his residence.
He was born July 31, 1922, in St. Johns, Mich., the son of the late George and Hazel (Betzer) Swagart. He was a graduate of St. Johns High School, class of 1941. After graduation, he served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II for three years where he was wounded in battle.
On Sept. 5, 1944, he married the former Norma E. Winkel in Rapid River, and began their life together in Cooks. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2004.
Gaylord was employed as a postal carrier for the U.S. Post office and retired in 1984. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, riding ORV’s, and also watching baseball, football and all sports. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and VFW Post 4420.
Gaylord is survived by his sons Larry of Cooks, Mike of Mason, Bruce (Christine) of Cooks, and Guy (Josie) Swagart of Cooks, Mich. Also surviving are six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gerald (Frances) Swagart of Cooks, and Leonard of Garden, Mich.; and sister, Isedeane (Clare) Applebee of St. Johns, Mich.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Varoni officiating with a VFW service to follow.
Burial will be held in the Inwood Township Cemetery at Cooks, Mich. Memorial contributions appreciated to the CBC.
