Gladstone falls 5-3 to Marquette in season opener

GLADSTONE – The Gladstone Braves got a good indication of where their team is at in a season opening 5-3 loss to Marquette, Thursday morning at Pfotenhauer Park.

The Braves’ top flights, No. 1 and No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles each won their matches in tough battles.

Lauren Parrett came out on top of two tough sets, one requiring a tiebreaker, to defeat Maddie Connor 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. Bridget Becker also required a tiebreaker in her first set against Eliza Annelin, before going on to win 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

At No. 1 doubles, Anna Caramella and Paige Schwartz won 6-4, 6-0 over Marquette’s Amanda Gray and Mallory Gurvgin. In a hard fought 3-set No. 4 doubles flight that decided the match, Marquette’s Ashley McIntire and Katelynn Palmcook edged Paige Loehr and Lauren Macfarlane 6-7 (6-8) 7-5, 6-4.

Gladstone will host Escanaba, Monday.
