Philip A. Spade

GWINN – Philip A. Spade, 83, of Gwinn, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 19, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital.

Philip was the youngest of six children born to Harvey and Dorothy (Weissert) Spade on May 24, 1931, in the family home in Escanaba during the Great Depression. He entered the U.S. Air Force immediately after high school and served for four years. Philip then graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a bachelor’s degree and later from Northern Michigan University in 1960 with a master’s degree. He taught in Gwinn Community Schools for 26 years until retiring in June of 1986.

Philip was a pilot and he taught several of his students how to fly. He was also an excellent carpenter.

He is survived by three sisters, Phyllis Anderson, Helen Young, and Valerie Ladewig; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Philip was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth M. Spade, on June 2, 2013; his brother, Douglas Spade; and a sister, Priscilla Lerch.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn with the Rev. Allen Mott officiating. Visitation will be in the Baraga Room of the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Military honors will be provided by members of Little Lake American Legion Post 349.
